An exceptionally rare and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century English display cabinets, crafted circa 1880.
Beautifully constructed in richly figured burr walnut, each cabinet displays a wonderfully warm and complex grain, enhanced by meticulous polishing and expert cabinetmaking. The lower doors are centred with exquisite hand-painted porcelain plaques in the manner of Sèvres porcelain, depicting romantic pastoral scenes framed within ornate gilt bronze mounts—adding a touch of unmistakable French influence to these distinctly English pieces.
The upper sections feature glazed doors opening to reveal shelved interiors, lined in a striking deep crimson fabric, perfectly designed for the display of fine objects. The glazing is framed by elegant mouldings and further enriched with finely cast gilt bronze mounts, including foliate appliqués and escutcheons of the highest quality.
Each cabinet is raised on a plinth base adorned with additional ormolu ornamentation. The Amboyna crossbanding showcases the incredible artistry and craftsmanship of this special pair. The proportions are both practical and visually impressive, making them ideal as statement pieces in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
Pairs of this quality and condition are seldom encountered on the market, particularly with original porcelain panels intact. Their combination of English craftsmanship and continental decorative influence makes them especially desirable to collectors and interior designers alike.
