$3,500.00
This wonderfully unusual piece of English Toleware was crafted in England circa 1850.
A rare and highly decorative mid-19th century English toleware plate warmer, attributed to the renowned Pontypool tradition and dating to circa 1850. Beautifully hand-painted, the black japanned surface is enriched with delicate floral bouquets framed by fine gilt borders, exemplifying the elegance and craftsmanship for which Pontypool ware is celebrated.
The hinged door opens to reveal the original interior designed to hold heated plates, while the top lid allowed warmth to be retained—an essential and practical item for the Victorian dining table. Raised on elegant cabriole legs, the form is both functional and sculptural, making it an exceptional decorative object today.
Surviving examples of Pontypool plate warmers are increasingly scarce, particularly those retaining such strong painted decoration and refined proportions. This piece offers a wonderful blend of utility, folk art charm, and refined English design, and would display beautifully in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
