$13,500.00
A truly exceptional example of 19th-century French craftsmanship, this exquisite Napoleon III marquetry jewellery table by Tahan represents the very pinnacle of Parisian luxury furniture.
Created in Paris circa 1860, the table is richly adorned with intricate marquetry inlays, showcasing a masterful interplay of exotic timbers arranged in elegant scrolling motifs and a finely detailed central cartouche. The craftsmanship is of the highest order, reflecting Tahan’s reputation as one of the foremost ébénistes of the period, patronised by the imperial court of Napoleon III.
The rectangular top opens to reveal a beautifully appointed, fully fitted interior, complete with compartments and a mirror—designed for the refined rituals of dressing and adornment. The case is mounted with superbly cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, including classical escutcheons and decorative accents that enhance both form and function.
Raised on elegant turned and fluted legs, united by a shaped stretcher and centred with a finely cast urn, the table demonstrates a harmonious balance of structure and ornament. Every element, from the precision of the marquetry to the quality of the mounts, speaks to its world-class standard.
Pieces of this calibre by Tahan are increasingly rare, particularly in such fine condition, making this an outstanding acquisition for the discerning collector.
A highlight of the upcoming 2026 AAADA Melbourne Antiques and Decorative Arts Fair, April 30th – May 3rd at Malvern Town Hall.
