19th century boulle mantle clock by Caydon & Sons c.1880

This exceptional Victorian boulle mantle clock was made in an elaborate Rococo Revival form c.1880. The serpentine-shaped case is richly inlaid in red-dyed tortoiseshell and brass Boulle marquetry, with finely engraved and scrolling foliate decoration. The case is profusely embellished with finely cast and chased gilt-bronze mounts, incorporating scrolling acanthus, shells and foliate ornament, and surmounted by an impressive foliate finial.

The white enamel dial displays Roman numerals and an outer minute track, with ornate pierced hands, and is signed Caydon & Sons, Clockmakers to the Queen, Kingston-on-Thames. It comes raised upon four elegant scrolling gilt-bronze feet, with this magnificent clock exemplifying the exuberant Rococo Revival taste of the Victorian period.

The case was likely made in France circa 1880, and a collaboration was made with clock makers Caydon & Sons, Clockmakers to the Queen, from Kingston-on-Thames.
