$2,950.00
A rare and highly decorative Regency Argand whale oil lamp, finely crafted in patinated and gilt bronze and retailed by the prestigious New York firm J. & I. Cox circa 1830.
Richly embellished with classical urn, acanthus and garland motifs, the lamp is further enhanced by a beautifully cast corona hung with sparkling cut crystal prisms, all raised on elegant paw feet.
The Argand burner, an important innovation of the late 18th century, produced a brighter, cleaner flame than traditional oil lamps and became the preferred form of lighting in fashionable homes during the Regency period. J. & I. Cox were among America’s leading luxury lamp retailers, importing high-quality English-made Argand lamps for discerning clientele.
This piece is in excellent condition and has been electrified for modern day living.
An exceptional decorative piece and a rare survivor of early 19th-century lighting.
